God damn
I love a
Nectarine
Jordan Ranft
God damn I love a nectarine
little sunrise bomb a little
juice leaking through my fingers
love that it tastes like
its colors yellow-tart-blush
-sweet-red-orange sudden as
getting slapped in a restaurant
where maybe she was expecting
a diamond and he’s clueless
that a bottle of champagne
sends an irretrievable message
and now all is stuck outside
of time by the sharp percussion
and his burning cheek the
muffled sobs as her face stuffs
into a cloth napkin something
about it breaks my heart
something about that first
bite breaking through the skin
the electric burst of nectar
a swollen river raging through
my beard this sort of indulgence
must come at a cost a debt
to be exacted in the next life
somewhere there’s a bitter stone
planning its vengeance surely
no one can get away with this
forever.
