Smuggling
100 Snakes
Allison Burris
Imagine how he charmed them into the bag
drew each draw string to a bow like a lullaby
made a bag of bags, pockets deep enough
for a canvas sack of snakes meanwhile, my
pockets can’t even make way for my palm.
One hundred snakes in all colors and varieties.
imagine what you could buy with 100 snakes
as they take turns wriggling then lapsing into stillness.
Imagine removing a canvas bag from an airplane-bound
pocket and finding it’s alive. Imagine it’s alive
with more than one snake. Imagine 100 snakes
down a man’s pants. Imagine if he’d gotten away.
Imagine one hundred snakes, undetected.
